I love this book! It's really quite a strange experience reading it. It transports you in a way that's different from reading a novel or short story, with the images propelling the narrative and setting the mood as much as the words. So it’s kind of like a movie in that way. How to describe the story?? It's about two unnamed lovers meeting in a desolate but beautiful city, that may or may not be an illusion or dream or some kind of afterlife. They wander there together, then the story goes into this abstract place of poetic words and haunting imagery. When you've finished it, you immediately want to read it again because you're left with this kind of pleasant longing and confusion––a lot like being in love. I think that's the point of the book, and it's really a very clever and lovely way to reflect on and explore the way it feels to fall in love, with a person or a place.Product details

Beautiful journey, captivating photography. You won't be disappointed!
This book is dark and absorbing. The photography is great, but it's not your traditional photography book. There is some grit to it, which really captures Memphis. I wish I could do something like this, what a cool book.
Beautiful book, a mixture between black and white and color photos, narrative which causes personal reflection.
Do you like Last Year at Marienbad? Les Fleurs du mal? Hypnerotomachia Poliphili? Trouble Will Find Me? Memphis? Joel T. Rose has created an intriguing fusion of images and words that is evocative and powerful. Nothing is literal or spelled out here, but these enigmatic photographs of buildings and places and unsettled, poetic text builds mood and mystery in a cinematic way. Architecture serves as a powerful metaphor for emotion and memory in Haunted City. Fascinating.
Having left Memphis just over a decade ago, Haunted City brought back all the feelings of love I have for the city--especially its aesthetic. I've always had a sort of love/hate relationship with progress in Memphis. On one hand, I want to support the city and see it succeed and make a name for itself as the fabulous destination it is. On the other hand, I'm in love with Jim Jarmusch's Memphis from Mystery Train. I romanticize the
less polished downtown I remember when I first arrived there 20 years ago for college. Haunted City captures the gritty side of Memphis and evokes a love for that which might normally be overlooked.
Beautiful
As advertised, it is wildly romantic--I would say deep rather than dark. This was a genre waiting to happen--text with photos. (A hundred years ago, novels had illustrations, usually drawings--why did they stop?) It is not an illustrated text, nor an annotated gallery of photos, but (like the movies) images with a script. It would be more like a movie if published digitally rather than on paper--but less like a book in that case. I look forward to more books in this genre, and foresee a million possible variations in style and content. On the coffee table, it will always start conversations.
